Bath, England

Last night we visited the pub right own from our hotel. Will loved the steak and mushroom pie smothered in gravy, while I had a bowl of potato soup. After all the food that Swiss Air served, I was still quite full!

This morning, we began our walk to the bus stop down the road, and woman in a car stopped in front of us and said, "do you need a lift to Bath?" We quickly agreed that it was better than riding the bus. After we got in she admitted that she thought we were someone else! After a stop at the RSPCA (the British version of the ASPCA) where she dropped off blankets for the animals, she took us into Bath. After we parked she told us exactly where we were and where we needed to go! A fun and money saving start to the day!

We were in need of some coffee and breakfast once we arrived in town. Instant coffee was the only thing available in our room, and we found out throughout the day that "filtered coffee" is something that is not typically served at a coffee shop, just espresso drinks. The cafe we went to was located on the bridge going over the river in town. After our filtered coffee and muffins, we began our journey through Bath.

The first sight we went to was the Abbey in Bath, which was really beautiful. The coronation of Edgar took place here, and is still a point of pride hundreds of years later.

After that, we walked around, taking in the sights of the town. Through the areas which inspired Jane Austen, up to the Circus area with amazing apartments, and to the enormous Georgian semi-circle overlooking the town.

Bath is truly a beautiful place, though I will admit a bit touristy in places. We took the bus back to the hotel after visiting Waitrose (the grocery store). I considered buying Marmite to try, but assumed it would be a waste of money, and bought the Nutella instead for my bagel in the morning. It is quite cold here today, around 60, but really damp and windy, so it feels much worse. We decided to go to Oxford tomorrow, after finding out that the tickets that went to both Stonehenge and Avebury were sold out. Tickets for just Stonehenge were more than a train ticket to Oxford, and we decided that Oxford would be much more fun! Can't wait to see the colleges and the pubs which used to be frequented by CS Lewis, and Bill Clinton(where he didn't inhale!) Should be another great day in England!

  1. I am loving the pictures and very much wishing you had packed me in your bags and taken me with you, though that wouldn't have made for an easy load or a romantic honeymoon!

  2. I remember going to a cathedral in Bath that had sarcophages on the floor in the sanctuary. Spooky. Is this the one? It's all a blur now. I also remember the automatic tea makers they have, similar to our coffeemakers. Jim

  3. I also remember going to the Georgian semi-circle! How would you like live there? Think you'll get to go to Wales? After I wrote it,I think that cathedral might have been in Salisbury. Been into any castles? Flea circuses? I remember we saw a heavily bearded street violinist in Salisbury who was really quite good even though he was three sheets to the wind, playing for money with a cup for coins on the sidewalk. The closest we ever came to seeing a homeless person in England. His remark when he found out we were Americans was unforgettable: "Ah, America. Everything there is cheap, plastic, or broken!" Another memory is passing by Stonehenge in our bus, but we could only see it from a great distance. Have you had stewed tomatoes for breakfast yet? Jim
